Science Museum
UNICAM has an important experience also in informal science education
through an hands –on and in-service teachers training through its
Natural Science Museum which developed several activities related to
science education and promotion of scientific and technological culture,
addressed to primary and secondary schools, to science teachers, and to
the public in general. The Museum developed hands – on learning
and research activities about the most important scientific issues of
the public agenda. With the project “Energies” the last year the Museum
organized a professional training course for “in service – teachers”. “A
Museum for playing”, “Travelling through Silica” and “On the Beagle’s
course. Discovering the Darwin’s Theory of Evolution” are just some of
the last examples of the temporary expositions which took place in the
UNICAM Natural Science Museum. All of them included interactive exhibits,
hands-on activities, multimedia didactic materials and workshops
dedicated to schools, as well as teacher training activities.
Description of the Institution:
Situated since 2003 in the splendid ex Convent of San Domenico, the
Museo di Scienze Naturali dell’Università di Camerino was founded in
1988.
The most important collection of the Natural Science Museum in the field
of natural history is the “Colfiorito Basin” fossil collection.
Excavations have been carried out since 1987 in the two sites of
Collecurti and Madonna del Piano, Colfiorito basin (Umbria-Marche
Apennine), near Camerino.
This collection presents fossil bones belonging to hippopotamuses,
elephants, rhinos and other Quaternary fauna. They were recovered and
restored by the technicians of the museum with non-destructive
techniques and using reversible materials, in order to permit any
possible future operations on the specimens.
Other collections located in the Museum are:
the "Cacciamani" botanical collection;
the “Battoni” Coleoptera collection;
two different ornithological collections;
the “Biocca” zoological and ethnographical collection.
The Museum offers a variety of didactic laboratories for experimentation
and practical activities available for schools during the week. The
didactic activity includes temporary and travelling expositions,
multimedia didactic materials related to permanent and temporary
exhibitions, museum guides and workshops.
The museum is also involved in the process of science education
and in the promotion of scientific and technological culture in society.
Strictly connected with its mission as “University Museum” the Museo di
Scienze Naturali pays great attention to didactic and research
activities with a section devoted to the history of scientific research
of the University of Camerino and laboratories about the most important
scientific issues of the public agenda like Energy.
